Anselmo Ralph: Angola’s most successful musician
Undoubtedly the most successful music artist of Angola, Anselmo Ralph has been on the top ever since the release of his first single. Born in Luanda in 12th March 1981, Anselmo Cordeiro da Mata is better known by his artist name Anselmo Ralph.
After many disappointments while trying to make it out in the music industry in the USA, he returned to Angola in 2003. He soon released his first Portuguese language album Histórias de Amor, which turned into an immediate success in both Angola and Portugal.
In 2006 he was nominated by the Channel O Music Video Awards in the Best R&B and Best Director categories, and won the MTV Europe Music Awards for Best African Artist in Copenhagen. He released in the following year the album As Últimas Histórias de Amor. Once again, another success.
Anselmo Ralph pre-released his maxi single “A Dor do Cupido” in 2011 that was certified four time platinum in Portugal. The fourth album A Dor do Cupido was released in March 2011 in collaboration with the Swiss Klasszik label and producers Nellson Klasszik and Dji Tafinha. Hit singles from the album included “Não Me Toca” and “Atira Água” the latter featuring Nelson Freitas and Eddy Parker. He gave more than 50 concerts to promote the album. It has reached number 2 on the Portuguese Albums Chart. The song “Não Me Toca” reached number 2 on the Portuguese singles chart.
In 2012, Coca-Cola announced a promotional campaign featuring Ralph, their first with an Angolan artist. He also gained a contract with Samsung and signed an exclusive deal with Sony Music, which has now the rights to manage his career.
Currently, Anselmo Ralph has produced 6 solo albums, all of them being at some point the top-selling album in different Portuguese speaking countries. He has also his own clothing and perfume brands, and even cellphones by Anselmo Ralph. Forbes recently listed him as Africa’s 7th richest artist, thus he is considered to be Angola’s most successful artist.
His first documentary is expected to be available in the local cinemas soon. The total income of it will be used for charity.
