Celebrities you did not know were Lebanese!

Lebanese people roamed the globe since the early history of civilization when the early Phoenicians built their sailing ships 3000 years BC, and started the first overseas trade mankind ever knew!

Being a small country, Lebanon’s population is no more than 4 million people living in Lebanon. But the strange fact that many do not know about Lebanese people is that there are more than 12 million Lebanese living abroad according to the Lebanese ministry foreign affairs. Many of them have another citizenship, and not known for their Lebanese origins.

Here is a list of 8 notable Lebanese celebrities who got their fame away from their country of origin.. Being the citizens of another country:


The British singer/song writer was born in Beirut in the year 1983 to a Lebanese mother and an American father. His family fled away from the civil war later after his birth and they settled in France, then they moved to the UK where he obtained his British citizenship. His real name is “Michael Holbrook Penniman”.


Serj Tankian

The lead vocalist and songwriter  of “System of a Down” and famous singer Serj Tankian holds both the American and the Lebanese citizenship.

Serj was born to both Armenian parents and he was born in Beirut the year 1967. Along side the drummer of the band John Dolmian, they both lived in an Armenian community in Lebanon.

PS: In 1943, all Armenian refugees in Lebanon who escaped the Ottoman genocides in the year 1915, obtained the Lebanese citizenship. (the year that Lebanon was declared an independent country)

Salma Hayek

The famous actress’s full name is Salma Hayek Jiménez and she was born in Mexico in the year 1966.

Her ancestry combines both Spanish (maternal) and Lebanese(paternal) roots. Salma Hayek visited Lebanon for the first time in her life early in 2015 to retrieve the Lebanese citizenship as she declared, and to take a role in the new upcoming movie called “The Prophet”.   The movie that will be based on the novel of one of the greatest Lebanese poets ever “Gibran Khalil Gibran”.

Just like Salma Hayek, the Colombian born famous singer’s ancestry combines Lebanese and Spanish (Catalan) roots. Shakira who holds an Arabic name was influenced during her childhood by oriental belly dance and music before she breaks into the world of fame from the gate of Latin music.

Lebanese born actress, model, wrestler, and Miss USA of the year 2010.

Fakih was born in Srifa, a small city in south Lebanon, to a Muslim family that immigrated to USA where she grew up.

Amal Alameddine is Lebanese-British lawyer, activist, and author. She is specialized in international law, criminal law, human rights, and extradition.

Alameddine represents Julian Assange the founder of WikiLeaks and the former prime minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko. She is also married to the American actor George Clooney.

Mia Khalifa

One of the most famous porn stars on the internet. On December 28 that year, Pornhub revealed that she was the #1 ranked porn star on their website. Khalifa’s fame is very recent, but in no time she gathered millions of fans on the web, as well as on social media platforms.

The real name of the Canadian singer who was born in the year 1980 is Sari Abboud. Born in Beirut, his family relocated to Montreal, Quebec when he was just 10 years old. At the age of 13, he and his younger brothers moved to Ottawa, Ontario, where he attended Hillcrest High School.
