Iconic Band: Okean Elzy
“I was in heaven…”, sings Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, the leader of the most successful Ukrainian band Okean Elzy and the author of the songs.
During more than 20 years of playing the band became an icon in the Ukrainian music world. 70,000 people visited Okean Elzy concert on the Olympic Stadium in Kiev last year (2014). That was the most crowded concert ever!
The music of Okean Elzy is filled with the romanticism and fortitude. It has deep lyrics, all written in Ukrainian and unique musical style with the Slavic melodies behind.
The band was formed in Lviv in 1994 and later moved to Kiev where it released 8 albums. Each album became a hit.
The band takes active part in the Ukrainian social life and charity projects worldwide. In April 2015 Okean Elzy presented a new music video “Ne tvoya viyna” (“Not your war”). This song encourages to take the responsibility and initiative, commented the leader of the band.
Okean Elzy was recognised many times as the best rock and live band. Its album “Supersymetriya” became double platinum. A lot of songs are soundtracks to the famous Ukrainian and Russian movies such as “Brat 2” (“Brother 2”).
Okean Elzy live performances transmit strong energy and drive. The tickets are snapped up like hot cakes and could be sold out a month before the concert.
