Province #2: Sihanoukville

Right next to Kampot, the second province on the coastal line is Sihanoukville. In French, “ville” means “city”. An alternative name is “Kompong Som”.

This province is probably our most popular destination. However, the only limiting factor is that it’s far enough to make a day-trip difficult and less meaningful. It takes about 3 hours to drive there, and fortunately, the national road is really smooth, unlike any other roads across Cambodia.

Why is it popular?

Sihanoukville has one of the best beaches in the world, and it certainly has the best beaches in the country.

Depending on the beach you go to, there’s a different kind of experience and sensation. This beach, shown in the picture, was taken at Koh Rong Sanloem, an increasingly popular island, and it gives a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Others, where there is more crowd and less isolation, you sort of become a Cambodian hipster – playing music, having fun on the beach, and enjoying each other’s company.

What does the most crowded beach look like?

What else is there other than beaches?

Sihanoukville is a city, so there is definitely a lot to do, in addition to beaches.

You can go to the biggest market. It has everything you need to find in Cambodia.
